  1. Instructions for using the Visual Proceedings CD-ROM
  2. ----------------------------------------------------

  4. This CD-ROM set contains the electronic version of the SIGGRAPH 96 Visual Proceedings.
  5. "Inline" audio and video clips complement this linked version of the print proceedings.  
  6. To the first-time user it may not be clear how to exploit all of the features of the 
  7. Acrobat documents, so we include here a few straightforward instructions and explanations.

  9. 1.  Directories, files, chapters and sections
  10.     Each directory (folder) on the disk reflects a section of the Visual Proceedings 
  11.     devoted to one of the creative programs: the Bridge, the Digital Bayou, the 
  12.     Computer Animation Festival, Applications and Sketches.  
  13.     In each directory you will find a file named "TOC.PDF",
  14.     which contains the table of contents for that section.  The Table of Contents 
  15.     is fully linked to all the pieces listed therein; clicking on an entry will open the 
  16.     appropriate file at the appropriate page.  Alternately, each file contains a listing, or 
  17.     set of "bookmarks", which link to the individual pages in that file.  The bookmarks
  18.     can be displayed by selecting the bookmark icon in the Acrobat Reader title bar.

  20. 2.  Hyperlinks
  21.     Every email address and URL (World Wide Web address) in the documents is an active
  22.     link to that URL.  These links are not so indicated with any border or other cue.
  23.     You must configure your copy of Acrobat to know which WWW browser
  24.     to use.

  26. 3.  Inline Movies and External Viewers
  27.      Windows and Macintosh platforms
  28.      If you are reading these CD-ROM documents on a Windows or Mac, then you can view all the
  29.      provided movies "inline".  Whenever a movie is included in a page a movie projector icon
  30.      will be visible.  The projector icon "points" to an image on the page, which is where the
  31.      inline movie will play.  Notice that when you move your cursor over that image it
  32.      changes into a filmstrip to indicate that a movie is embedded here.  Clicking on the
  33.      image will cause the movie to start playing.  When  it is finished you can replay it,
  34.      step through it slowly or quickly, or quit.  Hitting the ESC key will quit the movie.
  35.      UNIX platforms
  36.      UNIX does not provide support for inline movie playing.  However, you can still view 
  37.      the movie while you are reading the page by launching the external viewer xanim  
  38.      provided with this CD-ROM set.  (Check the installation and configuration instructions
  39.      on setting up xanim and your MIME types included with the xanim tools).   If you are on
  40.      a UNIX machine, and indeed if you are on any machine which understands the mapping
  41.      of MIME types to applications, you launch the external movie viewer by clicking on the 
  42.      same projector icon button beside the inline movie.  The projector icon/button says
  43.     "Unix/External" underneath it.

  45.     Movie Types

  47.     Movies are provided in two formats:  Cinepak-compressed QuickTime, which are the 
  48.     versions linked into the documents themselves, and MPEG.  MPEG versions are supplied
  49.     simply as data files and must be viewed separately with an external viewer.

  51. 4.  Supplemental Files
  52.  
  53.      Where supplemental files of relevance to the particular venue have been provided 
  54.      they have been installed in a subdirectory of the program directory called
  55.       "SUPPLEMNT".  A notable example is the time-limited VRML browser in the
  56.      Digital Bayou section.
